iPad SDK 3.2 beta 4 squashes rumors of a camera, but adds new gesture controls On March 11, 2010 | |
There's only about a month to go before Apple drops the iPad on the world, and it looks like all those theories about a last-minute camera addition were just fond fanboy wishes -- iPhone SDK 3.2 beta 4 just came out, and in addition to stripping out several video-call related icons, we've been told the docs contain this little tidbit about that Camera tab:
Launching the Photos application under the iPad Simulator will initially show three tabs: Photos, Albums, and Camera. The Camera tab represents photos available via the Camera Connection Kit for iPad, and is not relevant for the Simulator. The Camera tab will disappear after a few seconds.
So much for that, then. In the meantime, we also have some good news -- 9to5 Mac did some digging and found some files indicating that Apple's opening up some new gestures to app developers, namely the long tap currently used to pop up the copy / paste menu and the triple-tap used to flip the display on and off when using VoiceOver. It's a small consolation, to be sure, but at least the iPad, will, um, be a great game machine, right?

| New Clash of the Titans screens On March 11, 2010 | | Though they look crude by today’s standards, Ray Harryhausen’s stop-motion monsters were revolutionary for their time. The new film Clash of the Titans updates the special effects to modern blockbuster standards, but what we’ve seen so far of the game seems to lack the Harryhausen charm. ...

| Blur multiplayer hands-on On March 11, 2010 | | Developer Bizarre Creations is no stranger to racing games. It starting out in 1994 by developing a few Formula 1 titles, eventually moving on to create the highly successful Project Gotham Racing series. It was also responsible for the popular Geometry Wars series on Xbox Live Arcade.
Now, with its new game Blur on Xbox 360, it seems that Bizarre is fusing the two genres together; taking real-world vehicles (I liked the Lotus Exige Cup 260) and pitting them against each other with a host of power-ups, ranging from simple speed boosts, to missile warfare and attacks that involve deploying mines to block an opponent's path. A multiplayer beta saw a limited release yesterday, and I managed to get a copy.

| | In This Horror Movie, the Call Comes From Inside the Theater [Interactivity] On March 11, 2010 | |
newVideoPlayer( {"type":"video","player":"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/qe9CiKnrS1w&hl=en&fs=1&fmt=22","customParams":[],"width":500,"height":412,"ratio":0.824,"flashData":"","embedName":null,"objectId":null,"noEmbed":false,"source":"youtube"} );
What's more terrifying than a call coming from inside the house? The call coming from inside the theater. That's the thought behind Last Call, an interactive horror film in which the main character calls a random audience member for help.
Even though they knew their efforts were useless, moviegoers have long tried to help the ill-fated protagonists of horror movies. "Run!" "Hide!" "Don't go down there!" In Last Call, a new German movie, the characters are finally willing to listen.
Audience members supply their cell numbers at the beginning of the screening and, at one point in the movie, one phone is selected to receive a call from the character on screen. Voice recognition software listens for the moviegoer's commands and the story unfolds based on their instructions. From the looks of things it seems like it's a "left" or "right," "stay" or "flee" type of thing, so your exhortations for the main character to take off her clothes will likely go unfulfilled.
13th Street, the company that developed the film, bills it as the "first interactive horror movie." It'll probably end up making things goofier than spookier, I imagine, but they're right about one thing: putting the character's fate in the audience's control is a scary prospect. | Google prepares iPad friendly news reader On March 11, 2010 | | Google Labs has announced a prettified version of Google Reader, which could well end up being a killer app for the Apple iPad or one of the many new tablet PCs set for release later this year.Google Reader Play is essentially a more visual way of browsing through your RSS feeds, which might not appeal to news junkies with hundreds of feeds, but could well appeal to those wanting to kick back on the couch on a weekend to catch up on the sports results or their favourite book reviews and lifestyle features.It could well be yet another nail in the coffin of the printed newspaper, if Google Reader Play's interface is as easy to use as the company suggests.If you are not signed in then you will be shown news from sites that are popular on Google Reader, navigating from page to page with right and left arrows at the sides of the screen, or selecting a site from the options at the bottom of the screen.Share with matesIf you are signed in then you can do the usual stuff such as starring an item for reading later, agreeing to be shown similar content in the future, and select to share stuff you like with friends. Google's Garrett Wu notes on the official Google Reader blog that he is, "happy to announce an experimental product from the Google Reader team that makes the best stuff in Reader more accessible for everyone, while giving Reader users a new way to view their feeds. "In Google Reader Play, items are presented one at a time, and each item is big and full-screen. After you've read an item, just click the next arrow to move to the next one, or click any item on the filmstrip below to fast-forward. Of course, you can click the title or image of any item to go to the original version. And since so much of the good stuff online is visual, we automatically enlarge images and auto-play videos full-screen."Reader Play is an experiment and is launching in Google Labs for now.
